Pink Elephant
Dr. Jim Anderson delivered two speeches at the 16th Annual Pink Conference. The role that Blue Elephant Consulting plays in the IT industry has been recognized as being a thought leader and the organizers of the Pink Conference asked Dr. Anderson to share some of his insights with the conference attendees. Dr. Anderson delivered two speeches at the conference in Las Vegas on February 20th, 2012.
The first speech that Dr. Anderson gave was titled “The Secret To Knowing Where You Are Going“. In this speech Dr. Anderson discussed the Balanced Scorecard management technique and showed the audience how it could be applied to an IT department.
Dr. Anderson’s goal was to build a complete IT balanced scorecard during his presentation. He also showed how a single balanced scorecard can be used to monitor a department’s performance, communicate it’s strategy, and even ensure the proper execution of its strategy.
Dr. Anderson’s second speech was called “Secrets For Getting Them To Listen“. In this speech Dr. Anderson covered the common mistakes that IT professionals make when they are asked to deliver a presentation.
It’s not that they don’t know the material, rather it’s how they create their presentation and how they deliver it. Dr. Anderson addressed both of these issues by using his presentation to create a complete IT presentation the correct way. He introduced and used the Blue Elephant Presentation System to create an effective presentation that the audience was talking about long after the presentation is over.
Elsevier Corporation
On Wednesday, June 15th, 2011, Dr. Jim Anderson delivered a presentation on how to become a better product manager via conference call to a group of 20 product managers from Elsevier corporation. Here’s the feedback that was provided by the call organizer Jeff Lash:
Jim —
Thanks so much for your “5 Secrets to Becoming a Fantastically Successful Product Manager” presentation to our group here at Elsevier. The overall feedback on the talk was very positive, and people found it to be a good refresher of some fundamentals that they had forgotten about as well as some good new nuggets of information.
It was presented in an engaging fashion and the examples and anecdotes you used really helped drive the point home. Our product manager felt it was very useful, and we got positive feedback from others in related roles (e.g. marketing managers) who attended.

He made us realize that it’s all well and good that we’re focused on the now, but if we truly want to do right by our customers, we have to think of how we get our products to future state to manage and exceed expectations.”

2010 Tampa Engineering Week Banquet
A banquet is held in Tampa each year to celebrate national Engineering Week. This banquet attracts members of multiple professional engineering societies including the IEEE, ASME, etc. In 2010 Dr. Anderson agreed to serve as the master of ceremonies for the 5th year in a row. Here’s what the event’s chairwoman had to say:
2009 Transportation Supersession
In 2009 banquet was held in Tampa, Florida, to bring together the Civil and Mechanical engineers in the area. Dr. Jim Anderson served as the co-host for this event.
Dr. Jim Anderson served as co-host for the 2009 Tampa Bay Transportation Supersession banquet. As the chair for this event, I’d heard about how well he had done hosting other engineering banquets and I knew that I wanted him for mine. This annual event brings a large crowd – but one that has been known to duck out shortly after dinner.
The steering committee really wanted to keep our crowd engaged and entertained throughout the ENTIRE evening. We felt having two hosts might give us that special something that would keep the crown entertained. So we invited one insider (“the Civil Engineer”) and one outsider (“the Cheeky Upstart”). Dr. Anderson was my outsider and he made it seem as though he had been working with the other co-host for all of his life.
Not only did Dr. Anderson co-host the banquet, he was also a key part of the planning process. He attended our planning meetings and provided ideas that helped us to create an event that was both entertaining and educational for our audience. He even went so far as to create a multi-media presentation that entertained the audience throughout the event.
On the evening of the banquet, our co-hosts smoothly kept the show on time through multiple speakers, a dinner, and an awards program. I especially appreciated the humor and light touch that Dr. Jim brought to the evening.
After the banquet was over, many of the attendees commented to me that this was the most entertaining Supersession that they could remember attending.
